Estonia Legalises Same-Sex Marriage

Estonia has voted to legalise same-sex marriage.

It is the first former Soviet state to introduce the law.

The bill was passed by MPs, on a vote of 40 to 38.

According to reports, 23 MPs either abstained, or were absent, for the vote.

While the legislation has been passed, a recent opinion poll suggested that two-thirds of the country's population actually opposes the new law.

Under the new ruling, those in civil unions will now be eligible for state benefits married couples already receive. However, they will not be able to gain adoption rights. It is thought one partner is allowed to adopt the other's biological child, however.

The new legislation will come into force from 2016.
