Relationship Worries Stop People From Relaxing

Relationship worries are just one factor that is stopping people in the UK from relaxing, a new survey has found.

The poll, commissioned by AXA, found that in the UK, people find it hard to take it easy, with the average person spending 12 hours a week feeling fully relaxed. When broken down further, this is just one hour 42 minutes a day.

Topping the list of reasons as to why Britons find it difficult to chill out is money worries (34%), with loud or annoying noises (32%) and having to do household chores (29%) also featuring highly.

Of the 2,002 people who took part in the research, 17% admitted making future plans stopped them from relaxing, with 16% citing relationship worries and a further 15% concerned about arguments with their loved ones. Some 14% confessed to worrying about their children.

For one in 14 singletons, or 7% of respondents, they claimed 'FOMO' – the 'Fear Of Missing Out' – stopped them from being able to unwind.

On a week day, people were found to spend around an hour relaxing, with this increasing to three hours at the weekend. However, men were found to spend at least twice the amount of time unwinding when compared to women.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the most relaxing time of the week is said to be 5pm on a Friday, but when it comes to taking things easy over the weekend, men and women plan in different ways.

The average man, for instance, starts to relax at 1pm on a Friday and enjoys up to 10 hours of downtime at the weekend; while women don't start to feel relaxed until 7pm on a Friday. Sadly, they only just have five hours to chill over the weekend as they spend almost double the time on household chores.

When it comes to relaxing, 78% of people choose to simply watch television, while 74% like to listen to music and 59% enjoy going for dinner with their friends or a partner. 51% said calling a friend or loved one always helped them to unwind.

Discussing the findings, Mark Winwood, AXA's Director of Psychological Services, said: "Our research demonstrates that people struggle to find the time to relax and report the ever increasing pace of life and that we live in an 'always on culture' as key factors in this struggle.

"Finding time to relax is important and there is published evidence that tells us that not having sufficient 'down-time' can have a negative impact on both our physical and psychological wellbeing.

"Little things may not seem important but taking just an hour or two out of each day for 'me time' is critical for a healthy life."
