A total of 1,000 adults took part in the poll by travel search website Momondo.co.uk and were asked to rank their top companions when it comes to holidaying.
While a majority of respondents (64%) said they would prefer to travel with their other half over anyone else, the same couldn't be said for the in-laws as just 3% wished for this kind of trip. Interestingly, of the 3%, two-thirds were male.
13% of people prefer going on a trip with their own parents, with women choosing this option more than men. A further 29% cited friends as the best travelling companions to have, while an independent 6% said they would rather travel alone.
When it comes to a family holiday, the results were surprising as just 30% said they would prefer to travel with their kids; with 60% of women and 40% of men selecting this option.
A spokesperson for Monondo.co.uk, Lasse Skole Hansen, said: "It is fair to say our survey uncovered some home truths about family dynamics when it comes to going away.
"Without reverting too much to stereotype it seems the age-old label of the 'nagging in-laws' must still hold some truth today as just a very small percentage of those we surveyed like to travel with their in-laws.
"Taking trips overseas is all about experiencing the unknown, so it makes sense that Brits tend to prefer partners, spouses or friends as fellow travellers to perhaps make for a more chilled break."
