A new study has revealed that 70% of men lie on a first date – so they will look more attractive to a potential partner.
The research, commissioned by MobileSlots.com, found that men in Britain will pull out all the stops to impress a woman on a first date, with a majority even resorting to telling a few fibs.
In fact, 72% admitted to 'bending the truth' when it came to a first date, just so they would appear more attractive to a partner, with the most common deceptions being about their job, earnings and the number of women they have previously been with. For some, however, they go a step further – by lying about their relationship status and if they have children.
63% of men admitted they exaggerated the truth about their earnings when they were talking to a woman they were trying to impress, while more than half said they had lied about their career prospects. More than half of those polled also confessed to being deceitful about their hobbies and interests, saying they told women 'what they wanted to hear'.
A man's love for football – or any sport for that matter – was reeled in for that all-important first date, with a significant amount saying they downplayed their love of sport, instead focusing on the fact that they are animal lovers and a follower of the arts. When asked why this was, they said it was to appear "sensitive and caring" to the opposite sex.
When it comes to the more serious lies being told on a first date, a third said they were untruthful about their current relationship status – with 34% chatting up a woman while seeing someone else. One in 50 said they kept a former divorce a secret, while 2% of men admitted to lying about not having children.
Elsewhere, 64% of men said they also expected their date to tell a few lies, and therefore it was okay to bend the truth a little.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for MobileSlots.com, said: "It's safe to say that most men are not adverse to telling the odd lie to impress a date with salary, job and number of partners being among the most popular untruths.
"Interestingly, men also expected their date to be hiding the truth on a few subjects – so ultimately it was unlikely that anybody would have a totally honest full date – which may be understandable at such an early stage of a prospective relationship."
