The same-sex wedding, which took place in Russia, has been labelled as an "insult" by Vitaly Milonov, a legislator from the country.
Gay marriage is banned in Russia, but according to reports, the couple – named as Irina Shumilova and Alyona Fursova – were able to marry, because according to their passports one is a man, and the other is a woman. It is understood Irina, describes herself as transsexual rather than transgender, and is still undergoing hormone therapy.
Reports have said the 'loophole' is what allowed the couple to marry.
For their ceremony on Saturday, both Irina and Alyona are said to have arrived at a register office in St Petersburg, wearing white bridal dresses and carrying bouquets.
They later posted photos of the ceremony to Russian social media website, Vkontakte.
However, the wedding is said to have angered Mr Milonov. According to the BBC, he is quoted by Russian media as saying the staff at the registry office should be tried for treason or criminal negligence.
He added that he would seek to have the couple's wedding annulled.
"There are certain moral standards which it is vital to implement," he is quoted as saying. "These mad people should be banned altogether from getting married."
