Haenow, 29, revealed his troubled past in a recent interview with the Daily Mirror, admitting he became depressed and turned to alcohol after his parents separated when he was just four years old.
The singer added that he and his brother were raised by their mum, Rosanna, and that while he lost touch with his father, his dependency on alcohol continued into his teenage years.
He said: "As I got older I couldn't handle it and I used to drink a lot. I was necking a bottle of vodka a day until I was sick and paralytic.
"It takes someone to say to you, 'it's not normal, this isn't right', which is when you stop. I just wanted to get off my face."
It was only when Haenow turned 18 that he decided to stop drinking, and said he would like to get back in touch with his dad.
"It would be good to make peace with him," he commented.
During his arena audition for the show earlier this year, Haenow famously told the judges he and his girlfriend were "looking to get married sometime soon" – much to the surprise of his girlfriend. However, the couple, who have been dating for six years, are now thought to be planning to take the next step in their relationship, by tying the knot.
