One In 10 Men 'Have Paid For Sex'

More than one in 10 men in Britain have paid for sex, a new report has revealed.

The research, which has been published in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections, found that of the 11% who had paid for sex, a majority had visited places such as Amsterdam and Bangkok, areas known for their sex industry; while 3.6% had paid for sex in the past five years. 1.1% admitted to doing so in the past year.

The study has been led by University College London and funded by the Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council.

Of the 6,108 men involved in the study, single men aged between 25 and 34, who are in managerial or professional occupations as well as those who reported high numbers of sexual partners, were found to be the most likely to say they had paid for sex.

The report added that the act was also linked with other "hedonistic and risky behaviours", such as binge drinking and drug use.

The findings come from the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal), conducted between 2010-2012. This study focused on men, as the proportion of women who reported paying for sex was around 0.1%.

Elsewhere, it was claimed that men who had paid for sex had – on average – more than double the number of sexual partners; 32 compared to 14. In addition, those who paid for sex in the past five years were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with an STI.

The most likely age group to have recently paid for sex were those in their late 20s and early 30s. Nearly two-thirds of men admitted they had done so outside the UK at least once, such as in Europe and Asia.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Cath Mercer, UCL Infection and Population Health, explained: "The picture that emerges does not necessarily fit the stereotype of the lonely older man. In fact, men who pay for sex are more likely to be young professionals with many unpaid sexual partners. Many report other hedonistic and risky behaviours including heavy drinking and drug taking."

"Men who pay for sex are evidently at high risk of infection, but this does not necessarily mean that the STIs are spread through their paid sex," she continued. "Instead, we found that these men report engaging in other risky sexual behaviours, such as having concurrent – or overlapping – partners, and so should be considered a core-group for sexual health interventions and services."
