The man, who is said to be 30 years of age and referred to as 'Bobo', had been dating the unidentified woman for just two months when he sent the message, according to Ninemsn.
In the correspondence, he listed six reasons as to why the couple should break up, which ranged from his dislike of his partner's swearing, to his grievance over the fact that she was rude to his cat.
It is understood the message was sent last Monday, shortly before his then-girlfriend had planned to spend a weekend away from him so she could attend a friend's wedding. When she received the break-up text, she forwarded it onto her friend – who has been named in the media as Amy Nelmes – who then shared it on social media. The message quickly went viral.
The full break-up text reads:
"1. You refuse to update your relationship status on Facebook
2. You won't include me in things like the wedding this weekend. I should have been the one to escort you
3. You are rude to my cat and that makes me feel uncomfortable
4. You do not share your time equally and by now your boyfriend should be taking priority
5. Your swearing is unladylike
6. You won't disclose how many sexual partners you have had which makes me think it is upwards of 3 and anything more than that is unacceptable."
He signed off with: "I feel it would be difficult for me to change you into the woman I want and don't need that hassle. I wish you all the best in your journey."
Speaking to Ninemsn, the anonymous woman said she found the text message amusing, and refrained from responding. She also defended her decision to not take a 'plus one' to her friend's wedding as the guest list had been finalised "months ago". On the allegation that she was rude to her boyfriend's cat, she explained that she is allergic to the animals and if she was staying over at her partner's house, the cat needed to be locked out of the room while she was there.
