Playful Dads Suffer 22 Injuries A Year – Study

A new study has claimed that the average father will suffer 22 injuries a year as a result of playing games with their children.

The survey, which has been conducted by family insurance brand There, looked at the different injuries dads pick up each year as they spend spend time with their kids.

Of the 2,000 parents polled, the average father – of school-aged children – will suffer from eight injuries alone when they are playing games. Others are as a result of toys or items their offspring have left lying around the house, or tripping over the family pet.

In fact, for 40% of fathers, they said the most dangerous aspect of being a parent, was walking across a toy-covered floor.

A fifth of dads even admitted they had to take time off work because of an injury they had picked up. On average, a father was off work for 10 days, with a back injury the most common form of injury.

Elsewhere, a quarter have been hurt after 'play fighting', while just under a third of fathers have been head-butted by their kid. Other times they have been hurt are during a game of football, or climbing trees. And for an honest one in five fathers who had been injured, they said "I should know better than to attempt at my age".

The full list of an average father's 22 parenting injuries including three back injuries while playing, three instances of hitting their shin or elbow on a toy/coffee table. Two cases where they've been hit in the crotch; they had tread on a toy that has left lying around four times, as well as received three accidental knocks to the face. They have also tripped over the family pet on three occasions and four times over their kid's belongings.

Commenting on the findings, Clive Allison, Head of Member Recruitment for There, said: "Every father wants to be able to play with their kids and make the most of enjoying those early years before the children quickly grow up.

"Clearly that comes with a few inevitable knocks and injuries when playing around outside or on the sofa or even trying to keep up with them in a football match.

"More often than not a knock or bash to the shin can be shaken off but the results show more serious injuries can happen and have even led to fathers taking time off work which can cause families problems financially."

He added: "Sometimes it's best for fathers to know your limits when it comes to trying to keep up with the children. Inevitably having fun with the kids and that desire to get involved in the games wins out and sometimes the wear and tear take its toll.

"Given the bashing that fathers get in their 'line of duty', it's surprising that so few think about how they would manage if a more serious injury were to happen. In fact the research shows that they're more likely to financially protect their phones and pets than they are themselves."

The study by There, found less than one in five fathers had any illness cover, while fewer than half had life insurance.
