Third Of Brits 'Too Embarrassed' To Talk To Someone They Fancy

More than a third of people in Britain are too embarrassed to talk to someone they fancy, a new survey has revealed.

As a result, people are now turning to social media in order to flirt with a prospective partner.

The study, commissioned by broadbandchoices.co.uk, looked at how technology and social media is affecting how people interact when it comes to relationships.

Of the 2,000 polled, it was revealed that a person is more likely to 'poke' someone they like on Facebook, rather than ask them out on a date.

Almost one in five said they will use Facebook's private messaging system to communicate when dating, while others will opt for a text message or phone call. More than a quarter said Snapchat was their social media choice when they were trying to impress a potential partner.

When it comes to asking someone out, 50% believed they are confident enough to do so face-to-face, but a third said they are even too embarrassed – or nervous – to phone a person they like. 38% of people also admitted that talking to someone they fancy or asking them out face-to-face is simply too embarrassing.

From the results, it appears that social media is the way to go for many now when it comes to romance, but there are times when it can go wrong.

For example, one in seven respondents confessed to sending a "naughty" message to the wrong person. Of those, more than a fifth sent it to their parents by mistake, while one in 10 sent it to the "wrong" partner.

Interestingly, when it comes to ending a relationship the use of technology is still the option for many. One in eight people said they had ended a relationship via text message, with 5% sent a private message over Facebook. 3% cruelly took to the same social network site to publicly post a break-up message.

Commenting on the findings, Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert at broadbandchoices.co.uk, said: "Digital dating and social media have only been around for a relatively short time but it is fascinating to see how they have altered the way we interact with one another, particularly for people seeking new relationships."

Jo Hemmings, behavioural psychologist, is also quoted as saying: "If you're confident and looking for something fun and casual over the Christmas season, WhatsApp and Snapchat are great places to start.

"If you want something potentially a little more meaningful – or don't want to reveal, or see, anything naughty – stick with text messages or Facebook.

"If you want someone to know that you mean serious business and you're prepared to be bold, pick up the phone. It shows real effort and confidence – and could lead to a festive fumble."
