Men Are Worse At Listening Than Women

Men are worse when it comes to listening compared to women, a new survey has revealed.

The poll, conducted by Ladbrokes, found that men have lower attention spans for listening – unless it is when they are talking to their mates about sport or women.

Of the men who took part in the study, more than half admitted that they are a bad listener.

In fact, when men talk to their partner, they were found to 'switch off' after just six minutes of conversation. However, when they are discussing issues such as football or their sex life with their friends, they can pay attention for 15 minutes.

Sport is the most popular topic for discussion for more than half of the men who participated in the poll, followed films and sex.

It isn't just the men who fall down when it comes to listening though; for women they do listen more carefully and for longer than men – when they are having a conversation with their friends. Relationships was voted as the most popular topic of discussion between women.

When it comes to no longer listening to their other half, a man's attention span is said to be worst when he is flicking through the television channels, watching sport or playing an app. They are also more likely to tune out of a conversation if it is about someone they don't know, their workmates celebrities or clothes. Horoscopes, their other half's feelings and things their partner has noticed on Facebook are just a few more reasons they will stop listening.

They don't always get away with it however as 55% of women admitted they frequently test their other half to make sure he is listening. Signs that men aren't paying attention are when they take too long to answer a question, they have a blank expression or are simply unable to take their eyes off the television or phone.

A spokeswoman for Ladbrokes commented: "It's natural that the two genders will find different things interesting and certain topics appeal more than others.

"Men are obsessed with sport, gadgets and technology, and often these combine when trying to check scores, place bets or get the latest updates.

"Of course, this regularly means they aren't always their most responsive. As with anything, getting that balance between showing effort towards a partner and allowing time for following your passions is important."
