The course, run by Stirling Council, is aimed exclusively at fathers and focuses on improving relationships between fathers and their young children.
The Mellow Dads' programme is the first such scheme in the country, the local authority has said. For the first intake, five fathers took part over a period of 14 weeks, one day a week. It was established to help fathers who may not be coping with the stresses of looking after a young child, and try to develop stable, successful family environments for children from all backgrounds.
The sessions ranged from recorded interaction between fathers and their children, joint learning and play activities as well as group discussion and review sessions about what it meant to be a good parent. The challenges and responsibilities of what it is to become a parent were also investigated, while how small changes to the men's own behaviour could make them better dads.
Welcoming the success of the project, Council Leader Johanna Boyd said: "Early years learning is so important for children, and it's vital that parents understand this.
"This is a real groundbreaking programme giving dads who might have been having some issues dealing with being a new parent support to help them give their children the best possible start in life by developing better relationships with them.
"Families that interact together positively are far more likely to offer a stable and supportive start for children, which is the platform we need to help build to give them a better chance of success in later life."
