Midwives are only able to supply and administer medicines, without the need of a prescription within their professional role, when there is a Midwives Exemption (ME) or Patient Group Direction (PGD).
The new interactive e-learning resource 'Midwives and Medicines (NI) 2014', was developed through a partnership arrangement with midwives and pharmacists from the region, and aims to provides midwives with up-to-date information on medicines management.
This will be achieved through links to legislation and other supporting documentation; learning scenarios to assist midwives in understanding their role in relation to medicines and the relevance to midwifery practice; self assessments to deepen their knowledge and skills; as well as links to a list of commonly used medicines in maternity care including midwives exemptions and medicines monographs.
Charlotte McArdle, Chief Nursing Officer, explained: "Despite the legislation, there has been confusion around midwives' responsibilities in relation to the supply and administration of medicines, in particular around Midwives Exemptions, Patient Group Directions and relevant statutory legislation.
"I know that this innovative e-learning will be a great resource for midwives and will aid clarity and a better understanding of their responsibilities when administering and supplying medicines in the sphere of their midwifery practice."
