According to latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), more men are now staying at home to look after their children.
The figures also reveal that the rate of stay-at-home fathers is almost increasing at a similar rate as stay-at-home mothers are falling. Over the last year, it is thought a further 15,000 stayed at home to look after their kids, while the number of women doing the same fell by around 20,000.
In total, there are said to be some 245,000 men in the UK who are registered as "economically inactive", as they are caring for their offspring.
In addition, the ONS figures said the number of stay-at-home mums fell by 1%, while the number of fathers at home increased by 6%.
Reasons for the increase are said to include a rise in redundancies, with many men possibly struggling to find another job, or that it makes more financial sense to stay at home. For others, they make a conscious choice to stay home with their children, especially if their wife is the main breadwinner in the family.
Claire Paye, from Mothers at Home Matter, is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "It is great when children have got someone at home looking after them, whether that is the mother or the father.
"It is good that families feel they can choose who stays at home based on their personal circumstances. More women are having children later so they have had time to establish their career by the time they give birth, so there are more female breadwinners.
"There have probably always been men who would rather stay at home and care for their children but it was not what was expected of them. Now they feel it is more socially acceptable."
