The former Wimbledon champ was facing Tomas Berdych in the Australian Open semi-final on Thursday when the incident occurred. During what has been described as a "tense" game, 27-year-old Sears was spotted on camera swearing – some of which is alleged to have been directed towards Berdych and his coaching team.
Her outburst quickly attracted much debate across social media and while Murray, also 27, won the match to land his fourth appearance in the tournament's final, he was questioned about his partner's behaviour afterwards.
He defended his fiancée, saying: "In the heat of the moment, you can say stuff that you regret."
He added that some of the tension surrounding the game was due to his former coach – Dani Vallverdu – who now works with Berdych.
"When there's a lot of tension surrounding something, which you created, it's completely normal that the whole first set everyone was tight," he explained. "Even Tomas, who very rarely says anything on the court... there was tension there for him as well."
When her reaction was replayed on the big screen at the venue, the crowd reacted, but the British number one said: "It was only in the first set there was tension, like right at the beginning of the match.
"It wasn't like there was loads going on there. Obviously at the end of the set, when he said something, that was really the last thing in the entire match where there was any tension. It was fine after that."
Murray and Sears first met in 2005 at the US Open. They started dating shortly afterwards and in November 2014, after much speculation, they confirmed their engagement.
