The Girls' actress admitted to having a termination in 2007 when she was in college and explained she was now speaking out about the issue because she is ashamed of the "embarrassment around terminating pregnancies".
The 29-year-old told her story in a video to support the Centre for Reproductive Rights' 'Draw the Line' campaign.
She is quoted as saying: "I wasn't sure that I wanted to be attached to this person for the rest of my life. My life was just not conducive to raising a happy, healthy child. So, I decided to get an abortion.
"I did have to empty my checking account – what I had in there – and get some from my boyfriend. I realised if I didn't take the anaesthesia, I would be able to afford to do this. And the anaesthesia wasn't that much more, but when you're scrounging for however many hundreds of dollars, it is a lot.
"I just didn't have it. It's the obstacle and this stigma that makes these things not completely available... But there are little hoops we have to jump through to get them."
While many praised Kirke speaking out about abortion, others criticised the actress. She then took to her Twitter account to clarify her comments.
She wrote: "To clarify 'I didn't want to be attached to that person [MY BOYFRIEND]' he was mentally unstable (as was I) & abusive.
"I didn't want to put a child or myself through a lifetime of that chaos. 'Adoption. Murder. Irresponsible. Whiny etc' Let the comments roll."
Kirke, who was born in London, now resides in New York with her husband Michael Mosberg. They have two children together; a daughter named Rafaella, born in 2010, and a son, Memphis, born in 2012.
