Men Are Better At Multi-Tasking – Survey

A new survey has claimed that men are better at multi-tasking than women when it comes to certain tasks.

The research, conducted by Microsoft Advertising and Online as part of the Attention Span study, also revealed that a person's attention span is poorer now than it was in 2000.

Those behind the study said that in 2000, the average attention span was 12 seconds, but this has now fallen to just eight seconds. An increase in the use of gadgets is said to be a factor in the diminishing time span. However, the study found that many people are also becoming more productive.

Of the 2,000 people who participated, it was discovered that high volumes of digital media consumption improves what the researchers call 'alternating attention', or multi-tasking.

When it comes to multi-tasking, the study found the ability becomes stronger with age, with the 45 to 54 age group, performing the best. However – and perhaps surprisingly – when it comes to differences between men and women for multi-tasking, the males came out on top.

For example, 38% of men who participated showed a higher aptitude for multi-tasking, compared to just 29% of women. While men may be better at paying attention to a number of things at the same time, women were found to have better attention spans, and therefore more likely to see repetitive tasks through to completion.

Owen Sagness, UK General Manager for Microsoft Advertising and Online, explained: "Our research indicates that people's brains are adapting in response to their use of digital technology, causing an evolution of attention skills. Consumer attention spans alter depending on a variety of factors such as age, vocation, time and place, which impacts how they interact with advertising."
