Brits Keep Spending Sprees Secret From Their Partners

A new survey has revealed that millions of pounds are spent in Britain each year on secret spending sprees. On average, Brits will spend £1,600 each year on purchases – and not tell their loved one.

The study, commissioned by LV= home insurance, also revealed that people will not always be honest when it comes to telling a partner or family member about the true cost of their purchases.

For men, the most common items to lie about are the cost are clothes, gadgets (like tablets and televisions), and sports equipment. Meanwhile for women, clothes and shoes top the list, followed by jewellery and expensive makeup.

When it comes to hiding purchases, 42% of the 2,053 respondents admitted they do so because they feel guilty about the true cost, while 31% said they worry the purchase could cause an argument. 18% said their other person wouldn't appreciate the item's true value, while 8% said they keep their purchase a secret – because they already own a similar item.

And when it comes to hiding purchases from certain people, 60% of Brits will keep some of their spending secret from their partner. A further 39% will keep their spending quiet from their parents, with 17% keeping their friends in the dark. Disguising the purchases from their loved ones, 10% of those polled admitted to throwing away receipts, with 9% discarding the shopping bag or packaging, while 8% pretend the new item was old. Others admitted they simply resort to lying about the true cost of the item, with the average Briton wiping 49% from an item's value if confronted.

Interestingly, of those who had bought something in secret over the past three years, 36% had subsequently had the item they bought lost, stolen or damaged. 51% of those didn't have the item listed on their insurance policy – or had it listed for less than its true value.

The top 10 items Britons have secretly bought over the past three years are:

1. Clothes (55%)

2. Shoes (27%)

3. Gadgets and other electronics (24%)

4. Alcohol – e.g. fine wine (15%)

5. Jewellery (15%)

6. Beauty products – e.g. expensive makeup and perfume (15%)

7. Handbags (14%)

8. Items associated with a hobby (14%)

9. Sports equipment (12%)

10. Kitchenware – e.g. coffee machine (6%).
