The couple returned to their home on Bedford Road, Kempston, Bedfordshire at around 11.40pm on Saturday (19 May) when they made the discovery. The property had been broken into and their car – a black Volkswagen Golf, registration LT07 KGY – had been stolen along with cash, jewellery, an iPhone 4S and an iPad.
It is understood the house had been empty since 2.15pm.
Detective Constable Surinder Ram, Bedfordshire Police, said: "This obviously was an awful end to what had been a special day for the couple. I would urge anyone who has any information about the break-in, or knows of the whereabouts of the car, to call police."
Anyone with any information should contact police on 101, text 07786 200 011, or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
