Ireland To Vote On Same-Sex Marriage

A referendum to decide whether same-sex marriage should be legalised in Ireland is to take place today.

Voters in Ireland will be asked whether they want to amend the country's current constitution to allow couples in a same-sex relationship to marry. Civil partnerships have been legal in Ireland since 2012, but marriage isn't.

They will be asked whether they agree with the statement: "Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex".

Only Irish citizens who are registered and living in the state can cast a vote in the referendum.

Polling stations opened at 7am and will remain open until 10pm.

Counting of the votes will begin tomorrow, Saturday.
