It had proposed that abortions could only be performed lawfully at properties owned by the NHS – unless the circumstances were urgent.
A petition of concern had been submitted to block the amendment, which was supported by assembly members from Alliance, the Green Party, N121 and Sinn Féin, the Green Party, Alliance and N121. The amendment was defeated following a vote, in which 39 voted for and 41 against.
At present, a Marie Stopes clinic in Belfast city centre is able to provide women with medical terminations during the first nine weeks of their pregnancies. In Northern Ireland, abortion is only legal if a woman's life is at risk, or if there is a risk of permanent or serious damage to her mental or physical health.
