Women Tell More Lies Than Men – Survey

Women tell more lies than men, according to a new survey.

However, the poll, conducted by Privilege, found that one in three people will actually tell at least one fib every day.

Of the females who took part in the study, four in five admitted to telling lies on a daily basis – with some saying they do so as often as 30 times a day, or twice every waking hour.

This compares to just two in five men who said they tell lies every day.

When it comes to being dishonest, a majority of the 2,000 respondents confessed they did so in order to avoid hurting someone else's feelings. For example, 55% said they tell a lie in order to "make someone feel better", while 32% said it was "to not get into trouble". One in four responded by saying, "life is complicated", with others using reasons such as "saving face" or to "prove a point".

The poll also revealed that complimenting someone on their cooking (even if it isn't good) was one of the top reasons people tell white lies, as well as lies about their job, salary or weight. Pretending to share a hobby with someone they are trying to impress was also a common theme unearthed by the research.

Elsewhere, the most popular place to lie is said to be "at home", with work and job interviews close behind, followed by social media and CVs. And when it comes to bending the truth, who do people lie to the most?

Well, friends top the list (30%), followed by work colleagues and partners, and then children.

With this in mind, one in 10 did confess that a lie they told had ended up hurting someone they were close to. However, most of the lies are thought to be relatively harmless, with around 80% saying they only told a fib when it wouldn't seriously hurt anyone.

Dan Simson, from Privilege, is quoted as saying: "Encouragingly, this has shown us that even though we can be guilty of telling the odd porky, on the whole, Brits are likely to tell the truth when it matters."
