Young Couples Shun Wedding Traditions

One in five young couples tying the knot will invite their family and friends to their celebrations – via a Facebook invite. Other social media outlets are also used, according to a new survey by Laterooms.com.

A further 12% of couples choose to send their wedding invited by a text message, while one in 20 opt for an email.

When it comes to the wedding day, tradition appears to be falling out of favour in a number of areas. For example, just one third of brides now tie the knot in a white dress, with a similar amount choosing a red or black dress. As for the ceremony itself, 28% are conducted by a priest or vicar, while just 18% of weddings involve a traditional church service. Rather, two out of every five couples now choose to hold their entire wedding day in a hotel, with half using a civic official from the register office.

Elsewhere, more than half of bride and grooms no longer make the traditional wedding vows, while the traditional roast dinner has also fallen in popularity. The survey found that one in four couples will have a curry for their wedding breakfast and 10% will have fish and chips.

Just 18% of the 2,000 couples polled also have a traditional fruit wedding cake on their big day, with many opting for chocolate and sponge cakes – or even cupcakes – as an alternative.

Andrea Tarpey, a spokeswoman for LateRooms.com, said: "That most couples eschew the traditional fruit wedding cake is a sign of the times – nowadays it's all about chocolate cakes, sponge cakes and even American style cupcake towers.

"What we view as a traditional wedding seems increasingly to be becoming a thing of the past. There is clearly a trend towards holding the entire wedding service in a single venue, usually a hotel.

"With the cost of the average wedding now exceeding £20,000, it's key for couples to be able to personalise their day into exactly what they want, with who they want and where they want to make sure it's truly the best day of their lives."
