Number Of US Officials Stop Issuing Wedding Licences

A number of officials in the south of the US have stopped issuing wedding licences to couples in opposition to the Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage last week.

It is understood the officials are no longer issuing licences to same-sex or heterosexual couples.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a constitutional right for all, and struck down same-sex wedding bans across its 50 states. However, it has been claimed that county offices in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas are opposed to the decision, with many officials citing freedom of speech and religious rights in relation to their stance against gay marriage.
