According to reports, a 'GoFundMe' page was set up in the name of Amber Roof, which asked for $5,000 worth of donations to pay for her wedding – which she was forced to cancel after the attack on the African-American Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. She was due to tie the knot with her fiancé Michael on 21 June, four days after her brother carried out the shooting.
On the fundraising page, named 'A Fresh Start for Michael and Amber', the couple spoke of how their "lives were forever changed" by the event and their day had been "tainted by the actions of one man". They also hit out at the media, who they said "abused our privacy", after details of their wedding were published.
Explaining why they decided to cancel their wedding, they said it was "to protect our family and mourn the lives of those lost."
They added that the money would help "to cover lost wedding costs, to pay bills, and to send us on our dream honeymoon."
They also wrote that 10% of the funds would be given to the church in Charleston.
The fundraising page has since been taken down after it was met with heavy criticism, with many labelling the couple's campaign as "insensitive".
Dylann Roof, 21, was arrested a day after the shootings, more than 200 miles away in North Carolina. He appeared in court and was charged with nine counts of murder and one weapons possession charge.
