1 In 3 Parents Use Gadgets To Keep Kids Occupied In Restaurants

A new study has revealed that one in three parents in Britain will give their children a gadget in order to keep them occupied in a restaurant as they eat together as a family.

The research, carried out by Bookatable, also revealed the other resorts parents will go to 'bribe' their children in response for good behaviour.

For example, 34% of parents admitted to using gadgets, whether a smartphone, tablet or game console, to ensure their children don't fidget at the table. If a child does decide to act up, however, just 18% of parents said they would discipline their child at the dinner table – while 8% said they would give their offspring a sip of alcohol to keep them quiet.

A majority of parents had concerns when dining out with their children. For example, 44% just want their child to enjoy themselves while they are out, but 39% are worried about them causing a scene in a restaurant. 26% said they were concerned with their offspring trying a new dish, while the same amount said eating healthily while out is a top priority.

Getting children to do so isn't always easy, however, as 18% of parents confessed they would bribe their child with the promise of having junk food – if they ate something they didn't want to while they were dining out first. A prepared 19% even bring snacks to the restaurant to give to their child in case of an emergency.

In addition, almost a quarter (24%) said they use the well-known 'food myths' – such as carrots will help to see in the dark – in order to get their children to eat their vegetables; while 21% resort to burying the healthy food under the more appealing parts of the meal to try and trick their child into eating them.

When it comes to selecting a restaurant for the family meal, 61% of parents said the most important factor was that the establishment had activities for the children to do, 59% cited healthy food options, and 53% said affordability was a key factor.

Joe Steele, CEO of Bookatable.co.uk, is quoted as saying: "Eating out is a valuable experience for children and a great opportunity to spend quality time together as a family so it's a shame that so many parents feel they need to resort to giving their children a tablet or phone."

He added: "Perhaps the biggest challenge for parents is trying to keep their children occupied and eat the food that is put in front of them, which is why they adopt such a variety of tactics such as using smartphones as distractions or making food look more presentable.

"Our belief is that restaurants have a big part to play in ensuring that families have a great dining experience and that families feel welcome."
