The research, by sunshine.co.uk, included 2,347 people from Britain, aged 18 and over, and asked about their 'holiday fantasies'.
Respondents were first asked, 'What do you get most excited about when you think about going on a holiday abroad?' 31% said relaxing, following by meeting new people (27%), and exploring a new destination (25%).
They were then asked how often they fantasised about their holiday between booking it and actually leaving for their destination. 'Once or twice a week' was the most popular response (53%), while an honest 24% said 'daily'.
When it comes to the different holiday fantasies, sunshine.co.uk compiled a list of possibilities, with respondents asked to select all that applied to them. The top 10 answers were:
1. Go skinny dipping with partner/lover (32%)
2. To be in a resort full of celebrities (30%)
3. Go horseback riding on the beach at sunset (26%)
4. Join the mile high club (20%)
5. No arguments with family members for the whole holiday (19%)
6. Holiday romance with a handsome/beautiful stranger (17%)
7. Romantic candlelit dinner on secluded beach (15%)
8. Make love on a beach (14%)
9. Being rescued by a handsome/beautiful lifeguard (11%)
10. Being automatically upgraded at airport/hotel (8%)
Just 23% also admitted that they'd had a holiday fantasy come true on a previous trip abroad. Of these, more than half – 57% – were female respondents.
Sue Anderson, from sunshine.co.uk, said of the findings: "It's interesting to hear some of the top holiday fantasies that Britons have, and to see some less risqué answers in the list, like getting through a holiday without family arguments. It's sad that this is something that is on Britons' minds when they go away on holiday with loved ones, as it's a time when everyone should get on."
She added: "I suppose skinny dipping is one of those situations, similar to joining the mile high club, that is rather taboo. A lot of people have no doubt thought about doing it, but if it came to the crunch, would they actually do it, or would the fear of being caught, having your clothes stolen, or finding yourself sharing the water with sea creatures put them off?"
