Spain Increases Minimum Age For Marriage

Spain has increased the minimum age for marriage, it has been reported.

The country previously had the lowest marrying age in Europe as boys and girls could marry at the age of 14, with the permission of a judge. This has now been increased to 16, and comes just months after the government also raised the age of consent from 13 to 16.

It is understood the government initially announced its intention to amend the law in April 2013, but it only came into force today (23 July).

According to El Pais, between 2000 and 2014, 365 marriages took place in Spain involving under-16s. This compares to five marriages in 2014.
