Move To Introduce Same-Sex Marriage In Jersey Approved

A move to introduce same-sex marriage in Jersey has received support from the island's government, it has been revealed.

The draft legislation is due to come back to the States by January 2017 and will be subject to a separate vote.

The changes would see two types of marriage, civil and religious, as well as the retention of civil partnerships and other changes to marriage laws. The law will also allow religious groups or individuals to opt out if same-sex marriage goes against their beliefs.

Taking to Twitter after Tuesday night's vote was announced, Senator Philip Ozouf wrote: "@StatesofJersey votes overwhelmingly for #MarriageEquality 34 versus 4. A great day for a modern inclusive #Jersey".

Mr Ozouf is the only openly gay States member in Jersey.
