In July of this year, Caroline Starmer, 28, claimed that a security guard at the Primark store in Humberstone Gate had taken her daughter off her as she was breastfeeding. She also claimed that following an exchange with the guard, she was told to leave the store.
Taking to Facebook, Ms Starmer recounted the alleged incident. She wrote that she has chosen a quiet place in the store to feed her nine-month-old daughter, but was soon challenged by a male security guard, who grabbed her daughter from her breast and told her to leave.
"I stood my ground and stated my rights, that I can legally feed where I want," she continued. "Just for the security officer to physically remove my daughter from my breast and walk down the store with her, saying if I wanted my daughter, then I was to come and get her."
Her story soon made headlines and Leicestershire Police investigated her claims, but she was later charged with intent to pervert the course of justice. Primark, who initially said it would investigate the allegation, had also viewed in-store CCTV footage and denied the incident had taken place.
Appearing at Leicester Crown Court today, Ms Starmer pleaded guilty to a charge of intent to pervert the course of justice. The case was adjourned until 3 December, with Starmer being warned that she could face jail.
