The victim, who is in her 80s, was at her home in Queens Avenue in the city when the incident occurred at around 7.30pm on Friday, 9 October. She was home alone in an upstairs bedroom when four men entered the property. Two of the men stayed with the woman in the bedroom, while the other two searched the property. They later left with a quantity of jewellery, including her wedding ring, which they removed from her hand.
Detective Sergeant David Halliwell said: "Any crime in which older people are the victims is despicable, but taking a treasured wedding band from the hand of an elderly lady is a particularly loathsome act.
"We believe the males involved in this incident were aged in their late teens and were wearing knitted hats with scarves around their faces. We understand they made off on foot."
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
