In December 2014, the couple confirmed they had ended their relationship after four years together, however this is the first time the 36-year-old has addressed the separation.
In an interview with Allure magazine, she confessed: "Relationships ending are painful, and you can choose to carry that or you can choose to reframe it.
"If Matt and I had a great relationship, we would still be together, but we chose to move on because we had different visions of how we wanted to live our lives.
"That doesn't mean, though, that we can't rebuild something that would be the best thing for the kids."
The former couple have remained on good terms since their split, and Hudson said their new arrangements had been easy for everyone involved to adjust to.
"We said, 'We need to try to create something for the kids where they feel like they're gaining something rather than losing something'. It's been a seamless transition. Kids just want to see their parents be cool. Everybody's cool; everybody's good.
"We create the experiences that we want to have. If you want to create the painful experience, you can do that. You have the power to make [any] situation a painful or a difficult one. I want to try to create experiences that will be positive for my kids."
Hudson and Bellamy started dating in early 2010. In April 2011, the couple announced their engagement, and just three months later they welcomed a son named Bingham. Hudson is also a mother to son Ryder, 11, from her former marriage to Chris Robinson.
