Research Unveils Regional Differences Of Women Who Smoke During Pregnancy

Newly released data has revealed regional differences in the number of women smoking whilst pregnant. Data from the NHS found that expectant mothers in Blackpool are more likely to smoke throughout their pregnancy (27.2%), then those in Westminster (2.1%), for example.


It is thought some 70,000 pregnancies are affected by smoking each year in the UK.

Elsewhere, it is understood the overall rate in England has fallen to less than 11%, but a report by the Smoking in Pregnancy Challenge Group has set a national target rate of less than 6% by the year 2020.

The data, which has been published by the Health & Social Care Information Centre, revealed that one in five women who live in the Durham, Darlington and Tees area reported smoking during their pregnancy. This compares to just one in 20 women in London.
