NI To Consider Smoking Ban In Cars

Northern Ireland's Health Minister, Simon Hamilton, has suggested that smoking in cars where children are passengers could soon be banned.

Announcing an amendment to a bill which is currently going through the country's assembly, the law would make it illegal for people to smoke in a vehicle when children are present. A similar ban was introduced in England and Wales in October, while Scotland has said it plans to follow suit in 2016.

Minister Hamilton is quoted as saying: "I have listened carefully to the arguments made by many that Northern Ireland should follow the example of other parts of the United Kingdom, and I confirm to the house today that it is my intention to bring forward an amendment at consideration stage (of the legislation) to ban smoking in cars with children."

The move aims to protect children from the effects of second-hand smoke, which can increase the risk of asthma and cot death.
