Mothers-In-Law To 'Miss Out On Gifts This Christmas'

A new survey has revealed that mother-in-laws across Britain are the most likely to miss out on Christmas presents this year.

The study, which was conducted by Debenhams, found that more than half will be completely ignored by their son or daughter's other half, while 21% will receive a 'token' present, costing less than £20.

At the other end of the present scale are children – who'll have an average of £206 worth of presents awaiting them. Partners, meanwhile, will have an average of £163 spent on them.

Interestingly, men will spend more money than women, however women will buy a majority of the presents for everyone else.

When it comes to couples, of the 2,000 people who took part in the study, 50% of men said they would spend at least £75 on their other half. Just 30% of women said the same. While only 5% said they would like something 'luxurious', with 3% wanting to know what their present actually cost.

7% of women also said they expect to be left disappointed with their gifts at Christmas.

Looking at what gifts will be exchanged this year, 40% of respondents said they would like vouchers, and could therefore choose their own gift. Jewellery came second for women (35%), with clothing (30%) next on the wish list. 12% said they wanted flowers, while 10% said they wanted lingerie.

For men, books came second on the wish list with 28%, followed by electronics (26%). A quarter said they wanted clothing for Christmas.

Commenting on the findings, Christine Morgan, from Debenhams, said: "Getting a present right can be extremely tricky but its good to know that most people put some thought behind choosing a gift and try to get it right.

"We place great emphasis on helping customers pick the right gift for partners, family and friends, including the mother in law, regardless of how much they want to spend."
