Alcohol In Pregnancy Guidelines Updated

The UK Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) have published new guidelines for alcohol consumption. The new guidelines warn that drinking alcohol at any level can increase the risk of illnesses, such as cancer. There are also new guidelines for women regarding drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

They advice has been updated in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and state that no level of alcohol is safe to consume during pregnancy. This brings the guidelines into line with Scotland's recommendations.

Previously, expectant mothers were advised to avoid alcohol, but in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, women were advised that if they did choose to drink, they should limit the amount they consume to "no more than one or two units of alcohol once or twice per week and should not get drunk."

Commenting on the new guidelines, Dame Sally Davies, CMO for England, is quoted as saying: "I want pregnant women to be very clear that they should avoid alcohol as a precaution. Although the risk of harm to the baby is low if they have drunk small amounts of alcohol before becoming aware of the pregnancy, there is no 'safe' level of alcohol to drink when you are pregnant."

Jacque Gerrard, Royal College of Midwives (RCM) director for England, commented: "The RCM has consistently advised women to abstain from drinking alcohol when pregnant or if trying to conceive. Our message has remained the same – that there is no evidence that any level of consumption is safe for the growing baby.

"Drinking around conception and during the first three months of pregnancy may also increase the chance of having a miscarriage. Providing pregnant women with more support and up-to-date information is paramount and advising women on the potential consequences of alcohol consumption and smoking during pregnancy should be of utmost importance to all midwives, GPs and MSWs."
