Australian MPs Can Now Breastfeed In Parliament

The Australian House of Representatives has changed its rules to allow MPs to breastfeed and bottle-feed babies in the chamber, it has been announced.

Previously, MPs were only allowed to take babies into the public galleries or offices of the parliament building. Under the new rules, the infants will no longer be viewed as 'visitors', and therefore not banned from entering the chamber of the lower house.


House Leader Christopher Pyne is quoted as saying: "No member male or female will ever be prevented from participating fully in the operation of the parliament by reason of having the care of a baby.

"There is absolutely no reason that rules should remain in place which make life in politics and the parliament more difficult for women."

The changes were approved on the first day of the parliamentary year.
