Spain Confirms First Zika Virus Pregnancy Case

A pregnant woman in Spain has been diagnosed with the Zika virus.

It is the first such confirmed case in Europe.

The woman is said to have recently returned from a trip to Colombia, where she is thought to have been infected.

The country's health ministry said the woman, who has not been named, was diagnosed as having Zika in the north-eastern Catalonia region. She is thought to be one of seven confirmed cases in Spain.

It added that the diagnoses isn't a risk of spreading the virus, as the cases so far are "imported cases".

The mosquito-borne virus is rapidly spreading through the Americas and has been linked to babies being born with underdeveloped brains.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the microcephaly condition a global public health emergency.
