SDLP Pledges Payments To Newborns

The SDLP has launched its manifesto, which includes a pledge to give newborns in Northern Ireland a payment of £250.

The 'Strong Start Fund' would give £250 to every child born in Northern Ireland as a starting contribution to a long term tax free savings account. Once the child reaches the age of 10, this amount is topped up with an additional £250.

The party added that they will "explore with other parties the option of a third top up at aged 16."

In its manifesto, the SDLP said it "will give every child born here the chance to build for their financial future. It is unacceptable in an economy as wealthy as ours that children live in homes with no savings or assets. That ends now."
