The 55-year-old opened up about the couple's separation in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.
He admitted: "Obviously when you know you are going through something personal that you know is going to become public, it makes it quite difficult, and it becomes a weight on your shoulders."
He continued: "We're fine, we get on brilliantly. We have a lovely relationship, and that's how we are. And that's genuine."
However, when he was asked about the reason for the couple's split earlier this year, he avoided the question. It has previously been said that he didn't want any more children, while his wife did, and when asked about kids, Lineker said: "It's out there, what's been said."
Danielle, 36, is a mum of a teenage daughter from a previous relationship, while Lineker is a father of four from his former marriage to Michelle Cockayne. The couple divorced in 2006.
In 2007, he was set up on a blind date with Danielle. They tied the knot in Italy in 2009.
