1 In 5 Couples Overspend On Their Wedding

New research has found that one in five couples will overspend as they plan their wedding day. In fact, 29% of Britons admit that budgeting for their big day is actually the most daunting aspect of getting married.

The study, commissioned by Barclays, also found that financial worries cause around nine arguments before a couple even ties the knot.

A total of 1,000 married people participated in the research. One in five (10%), aged between 25 and 34, confessed that they considered cancelling their wedding because of money worries. For 9%, disagreements over finances did eventually cause a relationship to come to an end.

Looking at budgets, 21% will go over their set amount – with an average overspend of £7,971.

Some 19% of respondents said they wished they had planned a more low-key wedding, while 15% admitted that if they had the chance to do it again, they would elope.

It isn't just money worries that face couples on their big day, however. Some 27% worry about the weather, 16% are concerned about finding the right dress, 16% fret over the seating arrangements while 5% worry about getting cold feet.

Clare Francis, Savings and Investing Expert at Barclays , said: "Planning a wedding should be one of the happiest times of your life, but too often financial worries put a real strain on couples. In fact, our research shows that on average a fifth argue about money before their big day."
