One In Five Parents Use Their Phone While Driving

A new survey has revealed that one in five parents use their mobile phone while they are driving – and there are children in the car.

The research, commissioned by OSV Ltd, found 21% parents admitted to doing so, despite repeated warnings as to how dangerous and distracting it is.

Statistics have revealed that using a mobile phone while driving means that a person is four times more likely to crash than those that do not use their mobile phone while behind the wheel.

Figures from the Department for Transport, said that out of 88 deaths that were caused by in-car distractions, 17 were due to mobile phone use. This is a higher death rate than any other in-car cause.

More than 1,000 drivers took part in the survey. Of those who use their phones while driving, dads are more than likely to commit the offence, with 28%, while 15% of mums admitted to using their mobile behind the wheel.

Interestingly, however, when asked what distracted them the most when they were driving, 60% of parents said it was children or other passengers. Just 17% said mobile phones.

Debbie Kirkley, Co-Founder of OSV Ltd, said: "Parents are setting a terrible example to their children when they use their mobile phone while driving.

"Children are regularly told off for using technology at inappropriate times, or told not to use technology in certain situations.

"The best way to teach your children that it is dangerous to use a mobile phone when driving is to set a good example and not use your own mobile phone while you are behind the wheel.

"Taking your eyes off the road to read a text or make a quick call can be fatal and it is the duty of parents to behave responsibly."
