The study, which has been commissioned by Deloitte, found that disagreements were most common between 25 and 34-year-olds. Of those over the age of 65, 11% said they had argued with their partner over their excessive use of their mobile phone.
Deloitte's sixth annual Mobile Consumer Survey looked at the mobile phone habits of more than 4,000 consumers in the UK. Around a tenth of respondents admitted they would use their handsets "always" or "very often" while eating at home or in restaurants. Meanwhile, a third said they regularly used their devices when they are with friends or watching television.
A further one in three – and half of 18-24 year olds – said that they checked their phones in the middle of the night; and one in 10 would be on their phone as soon as they wake up in the morning.
Commenting on the findings, Paul Lee, Head of Technology, Media and Telecommunications Research at Deloitte, is quoted as saying: "Smartphones can enhance social lives, but overuse can be perceived as anti-social, and cause arguments.
"They are personal devices, but their usage impacts those around them. As with most emerging technology, consumers will need to learn how best to run their lives with smartphones, as opposed to having their lives run by their devices."
