The research, which was commissioned by DistinctiveChesterfields.com, found that the main reason for couples sleeping apart is snoring. This was followed by arguments.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, more than a quarter cited snoring as the main factor.
Others said having a row with their other half was to blame. Interestingly, 39% of Britons admitted they argued with their partner at least once a week. While the average argument lasted for two hours and five minutes, a fifth of couples slept apart for at least two days.
When it comes to sleeping apart, the most common place to sleep following an argument is the spare room (35.7%), the sofa (32.1%) and – in 7.5% of cases – the bath.
One in five women also said that it was their partner who was made to sleep elsewhere.
Some 13% of respondents admitted that they would never go to sleep on an argument, while 8% confessed that they had never had an argument with their other half.
Elsewhere, the poll found that untidiness is the biggest reason for couples arguing. This is followed by money, driving and family.
Men were said to be more likely to complain about their partner's driving, housework or what to watch on TV, while women were more worried about the frequency of their partner going out and finances.
Steve Laidlaw, Director at DistinctiveChesterfields.com, is quoted as saying: "As our data shows, arguments can have a real effect on the state of our marital beds, and it's shocking to see that one in ten couples are sleeping alone.
"When we think of our beds, we imagine a safe place to relax at the end of a hard day. Couples should always try to resolve disagreements before going to bed. If you do, you'll find you can get a much better night's sleep."
