Obese Women Three Times More Likely To Have Obese Children - Research

Obese women are three times more likely to have obese children, according to new research.

According to the EC-funded international EarlyNutrition project, a father's weight also has an impact – the heavier the father, the heavier the baby at birth, a strong predictor of overweight and obesity in childhood.

Professor Berthold Koletzko, project co-ordinator, said: "To break this legacy we have to get this message across much earlier – prior to conception.

"Individuals must take this on board and take action to achieve a normal healthy weight before conceiving wherever possible - and healthcare professionals have a vital role to play in supporting that action."

The warning comes after five years of EC-funded international research collaboration into the importance and impact of nutrition intake and weight status pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy and in early life on the factors that increase the risks of childhood obesity.

The EarlyNutrition studies also show that overweight and obese women at the point of conception are at greater risk of complications during pregnancy and birth, as well as potentially having a direct effect on both the early stages of life and the long-term health of the baby.
