The study, by sunshine.co.uk, asked over 2,000 parents in the UK – with children aged 10 or under – about the holidays their children had been on. The parents were also asked about the holidays they had been taken on when they were younger.
When asked, 'How old were you when you went on holiday abroad for the first time?', parents said they were 11 years old. They were then asked how old their own child had been when they went on their first holiday abroad – the average age given was 3. Interestingly, just 4% of parents admitted that their child had yet to go on a holiday abroad.
Participants were then asked if their holiday had been to a short or long haul destination. 96% said it was 'short haul – within Europe'. However, when asked about the location of their child's first holiday abroad, 37% said it was 'long haul'. Destinations such as the USA (51%) and Caribbean (22%) were the most visited.
When it comes to the time of year for taking a child on their first holiday, some 68% of parents admitted that they had been taken out of school during term time for the trip. This compared to just 12% of children today.
Sue Anderson, sunshine.co.uk, said: "Times are certainly changing. Holidays are now more accessible to the masses than ever, thanks to brilliant offers and family friendly resorts, so to see that the average age has fallen by eight years over the course of a generation is understandable.
"We also think there's less stigma attached with taking a very young child on holiday now, which is great. Taking little ones on holiday before they start school is a good chance to spend some quality time together as a family, without being restricted by the term dates."
