Princess To Lose Royal Status Over Wedding

Princess Mako, a member of Japan's royal family, is to lose her royal status by marrying a commoner.

The 25-year-old, who is the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, is to become engaged to a law firm worker named Kei Komuro, also 25. The couple met while studying together.

It is understood that the Imperial Household confirmed to local media that plans were under way for the princess's engagement.

Currently, Japan's imperial law requires a princess to leave the royal family after marrying a commoner.
