The businessman, who was married to the singer for 18 months before they separated in 2015, was appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain to promote his new pop-up restaurant at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
However, appearing alongside the show's showbiz correspondent Richard Arnold, he was also asked about his former relationship with the singer.
He was first asked: "We know you through Cheryl. Are you in a good place now?"
Fernandez-Versini didn't directly answer, instead choosing to discuss his restaurant business, he said: "I couldn't be more happier. It's my new venture. It started last night and it went very well. It cannot be better."
The segment's host then chose to directly ask his guest about his ex-wife – who recently gave birth to her first child with new boyfriend Liam Payne.
He asked: "Do you have a message for Cheryl about her baby?"
Looking uncomfortable he said: "It's the 70th film festival. We might as well focus on the festival and making it the best possible, I want to make it count."
When the footage cut back to hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shepherd in the studio, the pair exchanged awkward glances.
Fernandez-Versini and Cheryl married in July 2014 following a three-month relationship. They were married for just 18 months before they separated, with their divorce being finalised in October 2016.
Shortly after her split from Fernandez-Versini, Cheryl started dating former One Direction singer Liam Payne. The couple welcomed their first child together – a son named Bear – in March 2017.
