The Supreme Court has ruled that women from Northern Ireland are not entitled to receive free abortions on the NHS in England.

The challenge, brought by a mother and daughter, centred around the case of a women from NI who fell pregnant when she was 15. At the time, in 2012, she travelled to England with her mother to have a termination at a cost of around £900.

A legal battle was launched for women in NI to receive free abortions on the NHS in England, but the Supreme Court judges have dismissed the mother and daughter's appeal.

Abortion laws in Northern Ireland are much stricter that the rest of the UK. Currently, a termination is only allowed if a woman's life is at risk, or there is a permanent or serious risk to her mental or physical health. Rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities are not circumstances in which abortions can be performed legally in the region.
