The research, by sunshine.co.uk, involved over 1,400 people, aged 18 and over and from the UK, who were in a co-habiting relationship.
They were first asked, 'During your most recent two week holiday, how many times did you have sex with your partner?', to which the average answer was 'once'. Over a fifth of respondents (21%) said that they didn't have sex with their partner at all during the holiday.
Participants were then asked the same question, but in relation to their home life. Interestingly, it was found that – on average – they have sex once a week.
For those who said they slept with their partner less on holiday, they were asked as to the reason why. The top answers included sharing a room with kids, so we couldn't (42%), the room was too hot for lovemaking (39%), and sunburn made touching uncomfortable/painful (25%). Other popular answers were concerns about other hotel/accommodation guests overhearing (19%) and concerns about housekeeping staff walking in (16%).
Interestingly, some 34% of respondents said that they actually argued more with their partner on holiday than they did at home, with disagreeing about how to spend time (21%) and the stress of travelling (18%) common reasons for arguments starting.
Respondents were then asked if their partner was their favourite person to go on holiday with – to which 56% said no.
Sue Anderson, from sunshine.co.uk, said of the findings: "Clearly, holidays just don't put some people in the mood. It can be difficult for couples to be intimate if there are little ones close-by, which is why adjoining rooms or apartments with separate bedrooms can be best for families, rather than just one big room where everyone bunks together."
